Merengue has been part of the Dominican Republic’s cultural identity for over a century and is part of our history. It has Spanish, African, and Taíno influences, and its lyrics narrate the daily life in our country. Merengue music and dance were both declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2016.
